Research engineer in advanced superconducting qubit control

Research engineer in advanced superconducting qubit control

We are looking for a motivated research engineer candidate to join the Superconducting Quantum Information Device Lab (SQuID Lab) to work on developing and deploying next-generation calibration and benchmarking software and hardware in close collaboration with other researchers and engineers at Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP). The engineering tasks will focus on development of infrastructure (software and hardware) for superconducting quantum processor R&D enabling quantum error correction with superconducting qubits.

We are seeking candidates at the level of advanced phd or postdoc with prior experience in superconducting quantum processor R&D, including device design, development of new gates/qubit control schemes, advanced calibration and/or QCVV strategies. A strong software background with demonstrated experience in qubit control is a must.

The SQuID Lab is a research team within the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP) and Center for Quantum Devices (QDev) at the Niels Bohr Institute. Our research falls broadly within two areas of superconducting quantum information physics:

  • Novel superconducting qubits, circuits and couplers e.g. protected qubit encodings, non-standard Josephson junction physics, developing new qubit-coupling and related activities.
  • Multi-qubit superconducting systems e.g. novel control, characterization, benchmarking and calibration techniques as well as quantum error mitigation and quantum error correction.

The position will include responsibilities relevant for being part of a large data-driven culture as part of NQCP and the SQuID Lab. Moreover, the position will involve a high degree of interdisciplinarity and successful candidates are expected to work closely with multiple research and dedicated engineering teams within NQCP and at QDev.

Description of the scientific environment
The position will be part of the SQuID Lab, a team of roughly 20 researchers from bachelor to senior researcher level. Our team is embedded jointly at the Center for Quantum Devices and the Novo Nordisk Quantum Computing Programme, both located at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. The ambition of NQCP is to build a mission-driven full-stack approach which will involve exciting innovations at every level, from the quantum processor to the quantum-classical interface all the way quantum algorithms and applications. The vision of the programme is to enable the development of fault-tolerant quantum computing hardware and quantum algorithms that solve important problems in the life-sciences.

The position is open from January 1st 2025 or by arrangement. The duration of the research engineer position is four years (with possibility for extension). The position is supported by Novo Nordisk Foundation (NQCP) and European Research Council (NovADePro).

Inquiries about the position should be made to Associate Professor Morten Kjaergaard ( mkjaergaard@nbi.ku.dk) and Research Scientist Jacob Hastrup ( jacob.hastrup@nbi.ku.dk), both at NQCP and QDev.

Terms of employment
The research engineer has a duration of 4 years with possibility for extension. It is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. You will be employed as academic staff or special consultant, depending on your academic and professional background.

Appointment will be subject to receipt of a security clearance.

Application Procedure:
The application, in English, must be submitted electronically by clicking APPLY NOW below Please include

  • 1-2 page motivated application
  • Curriculum vita
  • Diplomas (Master and PhD degree or equivalent)
  • Complete publication list
  • If applicable, description of experience with projects related to quantum processor engineering: software development, hardware experience, quantum processor design experience or related (max 2 pages)
Application deadline:13 October 2024, 23:59 GMT +1

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee.

As an equal opportunity employer, the University of Copenhagen invites applications from all qualified candidates, regardless of gender, age, religion, or ethnic origin. You can read more about the recruitment process at https://employment.ku.dk/faculty/recruitment-process/ .
