Engineering Manager, Sustaining

Not all engineering is about building something new

At Onics, a large part of engineering is about something else:

Ensuring products continue to function, can be maintained, improved, and evolved - even years after launch.

Det er her, Sustaining Engineering kommer ind i billedet.

We develop our own products across hardware, embedded software, and mechanics, and our solutions are built around high compatibility, platform reuse, and long-term reliability. This creates a strong technical foundation, but also means that changes are rarely isolated to a single product.

When a component reaches end-of-life.
When production runs into a technical limitation.
When a product behaves differently in the field.
When quality, architecture, and supply reliability all need to be balanced at the same time.

That is when Sustaining Engineering needs to understand the bigger picture and drive the right solution forward.

The role

As Engineering Manager, Sustaining, you will be responsible for a smaller cross-functional engineering team with competencies across hardware, firmware, and embedded software. At the same time, you will work closely with software, mechanics, production engineering, supply chain, and customer success teams.

This is not only a traditional people management role.

It is a technical leadership role where you must be able to create direction in complex technical situations, prioritize effectively, and help the team move safely from problem to solution. At the same time, the role includes people management responsibilities — either from the beginning or gradually over time.

You are not expected to be a specialist in every discipline.

But you must be able to understand the bigger picture, ask the right questions, and challenge solutions from a technical perspective.

A large part of the team’s work revolves around:

  • technical troubleshooting and root cause investigations

  • product maintenance and change management

  • quality issues and technical clarifications

  • component changes and platform maintenance

  • coordination across engineering, production, and customer success

  • prioritization of sustaining activities with varying levels of complexity and business impact

Some tasks take 10 minutes. Others take three months.

This is therefore a role for someone who thrives in an environment where priorities can shift quickly, and where you do not always know at 9 AM what will be most important by 3 PM.

How the team works

Sustaining Engineering acts as a link between multiple parts of the organization.

Many tasks originate in customer success or support, where specific issues are identified and qualified before reaching engineering. Others come from supply chain, production, or the project organization.

The team owns tasks from analysis to resolution but works closely with specialists across the organization whenever deeper insight is needed within software, mechanics, or other specialist domains.

This also means the role requires strong collaboration skills, technical overview, and the ability to create momentum even when complexity is high.

This role is especially interesting if…

You are technically strong and want to take the next step toward leadership, without moving away from the technology itself.

You may come from a background such as:

  • Hardware Engineer

  • Electronics Engineer

  • Firmware Engineer

  • Embedded Engineer

  • Technical Project Manager

  • or a similar technical role

…where you have built a broad technical and system-level understanding.

It is not critical that you already have extensive leadership experience.

What matters most is that you have the motivation and potential to take responsibility for people, priorities, and technology.

We imagine that you:

  • have experience from a technical development organization

  • can work across hardware, firmware, and software-adjacent problem areas

  • are motivated by complex technical challenges

  • are structured and proactive

  • can create overview and momentum in a fast-changing environment

  • have natural technical credibility and can create followership around you

Hands-on technical experience in addition to formal education will be considered a strong advantage.

What you will get from the role

You will take on a role with real influence on products, quality, and engineering processes.

At the same time, you will have the opportunity to grow as a technical leader in an organization that believes strong specialists can evolve into broader leadership responsibilities over time.

You will become part of an environment with:

  • high technical competence

  • significant technical complexity

  • close cross-functional collaboration

  • freedom with responsibility

  • and respect for people who take ownership

This is not a role where you sit far away from the technology.

It is a role for someone who wants to stay close to the people, the products, and the decisions that make complex technical solutions work in practice.
